Today we discussed speeches and how they relate to the future topic of argumentative or persuasive writing. We also discussed what a claim is, and how people who work them into speeches and use examples to prove what that their claim is true. Point of view was touched upon but will be the main topic for next week’s lesson. Please use the notes below to help you complete the homework located at the bottom of the page.

Notes

Speech – a formal address delivered to an audience.

Claim –  an assertion open to challenge. 

Assertion a confident and forceful statement of fact or belief.
